The McAllen heritage Center (MHC) - Museum of McAllen history opened to the public during June 2008. We welcome you to visit us and enjoy learning about McAllen's colorful history! We have story-telling sessions, children's activities, an educational "Traveling Trunks" program, and many more projects that are under development.

The museum is located inside the historic old McAllen Post Office building now known as “La Placita” directly across from JC Penney in downtown McAllen, and is open Wednesday through Friday from 1pm to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 4pm .

The MHC "Called to Higher Service" exhibit honoring Valley Country Music icon, Roland Garcia known as "Country Roland" is still on display at MHC! This exhibit which honors impactful McAllen or Valleyites that have passed was opened in February 2014 to a standing room only crowd and has been very popular this year. The exhibit will remain for a short period so please make plans to come by the museum soon!

"La Tiendita" the MHC Museum shop is now OPEN!

Wow, our little shop is up and running inside the museum! We have numerous items for sale including our "We got McAllen history" tees, historic books covering our City 100 year history, citrus industry and medical history,
MHC book markers, Centennial pins and many other items.

Coming soon--sweet stuff! Grapefruit and orange jelly bellies in small packets for a small donation in honor of our citrus industry! Look for the big jar chock full of those little delicious little goodies! We also have to thank the McAllen Chamber of Commerce for the items they sent over for the store including post cards and some neat clocks and board member Carmen de Leon for donating some charro hats and vintage dolls to our inventory!

Of course, kudos to our Spud Brown for finding the store fixtures and getting those set up for us, to our museum services assistant Lily for stocking and arranging items and to Elva Cerda for everything in between! It's been fun and we are happy that we've created another source of funds for our little jewel of a history museum! Thanks to all! Come see us!
